Also below, find answers to many of the most often asked questions about the program.

Public nominations will be open from February 2025 – August 2025. During that time, you can upload your nomination to our nomination form here on the website (link to come when it’s open). Please make sure you’ve reviewed the Eligibility Guidelines (coming soon) before submitting a nomination – you will only be able to submit a nomination for an eligible species that meets the requirements noted on that page.

Unfortunately, the NCTP is an honorary program only and does not confer any special protections to trees. Some local city/county ordinances protect Champion Trees through a “tree protection ordinance”, so make sure to check your local laws and regulations for more information. If your city has an Urban Forester, you can also ask them for help!

The NCTP is an honorary program and doesn’t claim any ownership of the trees that are crowned as National Champions. If your tree becomes a National Champion, it may be subject to local tree protection ordinances, but in most states, there are no legal restrictions on what you can do with a tree that you own. The National Champion Tree Program does not enforce any sort of tree protection ordinances – we just measure and document the trees. Check your local laws and regulations for more information. If your city has an Urban Forester, you can also ask them for help!

We only share the exact location of Champion Trees that are publicly accessible and where the owner has given express permission for members of the public to visit. Otherwise, we identify these trees only down to the county and state level. Many of these trees are on private property or are surrounded by delicate ecosystems that would be damaged by people walking around. The preservation of these trees (and the protection of people’s private information) is of the utmost importance to us, so we tend to err on the side of privacy and keep the locations secret. If the location is not listed on the current Champion Tree Register, we will not share its location.

Absolutely! Our training program is currently being built – if you’d like to be notified when it’s up and running, please submit your information here: National Cadre of Tree Measurement Experts Interest Form
